  • A 25 Year Old's Call to Action A 25 Year Old's Call to Action

FORWARD THIS TO EVERYONE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK, and don't trip, it's not even THAT long so READ THE WHOLE THING!

Wuz up, I am 25 years old, living in the A, and I wanna make a call to action to people in and near my age group (and those who are young at heart)....

I know we're soooo bored with what's out there but (and I know this is hypocritical) we keep going back to it because it's the only thing out there - thrown in our faces all the time! And is it really our fault? We are a generation that's been taught the 'entitlement factor'; this laissez-faire idea that if we just get to a certain status in life everything else will fall in place…not telling us what happens if we don’t get to that place, where exactly that place is, by what age we should be at that place or why the heck we should get to that place at all! So in a zombie-like way we conform; not (seriously) considering that there might be alternatives, not identifying who we are, not questioning 'the norm', and usually lacking the self-esteem necessary to make wise decisions. It's like we've been unknowingly casted in a really bad stage play and commissioned to continuously reenact the script although we don't even know which character we're supposed to play or, for that matter, if we should even be in the play at all!

That said, (sigh) I breathe out a sigh of relief...finally a place online to 'charge up' from the insincere, materialistic expectations. I am completely stoked about this new social site! It's set up a lot like the other popular social sites. I see it as an outlet to express who I really am, stay in touch with friends, and a resource to access empowering information. But, dare I ask, in all honesty and in the same contemplative mindset, will this site stick around? I mean, let's face it, yes, we do need (not only 'want') it but who's gonna carry their individual torch and create a buzz about it? Cause you know that's how these social sites work....high volumes of traffic in and out of the site constantly.

So, I know I'll carry my torch but what I wanna know is - what about you

What are you gonna do to get people to join this free social site? What are your suggestions about the site? What should it add? What should it take off? What would make you keep coming back? Is it user-friendly? What!?!? We gotta keep it around and make it "blow up like the world trade" as one iconic rapper so eloquently put it.

Join for free at www.healmybody.net and let me know the deal at jsbrewton@att.net. There's more info about this NEW and DIFFERENT social site...so browse around the site and also check out www.healglobal.com.

  • Concerns over community superb Concerns over community superbug

    • From: blogger
    • Description:

Experts said they are remaining vigilant after seeing 100 cases of a superbug in healthy people in England and Wales over the last three years.

MRSA is commonly thought of as a hospital superbug.

But a strain has been identified which causes skin infections in healthy people living in the community.

The Health Protection Agency said one 28-year-old woman had died from pneumonia after contracting the condition.

It's difficult to know how common it actually is because of the lack of a proper surveillance system.
Dr Donald Morrison, Scottish MRSA Reference Laboratory

The severe form of pneumonia is a rare complication of CA-MRSA.

MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a recognised problem in hospitals and nursing homes, where those infected are weakened by illness.

However, experts have identified the genetically different strain of the disease which is affecting healthy people in the community.

This form of MRSA appears as sores which look like insect bites, and is spread by skin-to-skin contact. If untreated, it can develop into abscesses and boils.

It is resistant to methicillin, but does respond to several other antibiotics.

      High risk groups

In the US, the condition has been linked to health-clubs and gyms. But the HPA said there had been no reports of cases being picked up in that way in this country.

Instead, it said the risk would be higher in contact sports such as wrestling and rugby, where open wounds could become infected using dirty towels.

Other groups at high risk include prisoners and intravenous drug users.

Around 30% of the population carry Staphylococcus aureus in their noses or on their skin, but are not made ill by it.

The 100 cases reported to the HPA were predominantly those who were infected with the strain, although some were simply people who carried CA-MRSA.

Dr Donald Morrison, of the Scottish MRSA Reference Laboratory, told the BBC News Website: "These numbers are an indication of the prevalence of community-acquired MRSA.

"But it's difficult to know how common it actually is because of the lack of a proper surveillance system."

Liberal Democrat health spokesman Paul Burstow said: "These new findings must mean that community infections should now register on the government's radar."

      Death certificates

In a separate development on Monday, hospitals in England were told they should be kept clean "all day, every day" on 'Think Clean Day', thr latest drive to improve hygiene and battle the superbugs.

It came as health workers union Unison said that employing more hospital cleaners should be the main weapon in the battle against deadly superbugs such as MRSA.

Shadow Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said: "Every day should be think clean day. We need consistent, not piecemeal action."

Last week figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that the number of deaths in which MRSA was a factor doubled in four years.

The number of death certificates mentioning MRSA rose from 487 in 1999 to 955 in 2003.

  • Leaving Leaving

    • From: Bleeding_Rain
    • Description:

My best friend is leaving and it’s going to be hard to cope
It’s hard trying to be happy while he’s still here
When all I feel like doing most of the time is crying
One of the three lights in my life is leaving
And I’m not sure what to do
      It hurts
      I’m afraid too
I’m afraid I’ll fall apart once he leaves
      I’m afraid I won’t keep my resolve
I’m afraid that my unhappiness that Yuki’s leaving will hurt my Stormy
      I don’t want that
I don’t want him to hurt because of me
I don’t want him to believe that I care for Yuki more than I care for him
I don’t want him to think that
      Cause it’s not true
      I do care for Yuki
I care for him a lot but
      He’s not my Stormy

      It’s tearing me up
      He’s my best friend
I don’t want him to leave
      He just can’t
      The tears come so much
It hurts to think of him gone
Whenever he’s not at school there’s a void
But I always know he’ll be back
Now to think that he won’t be there
      It scares me
Sure I knew that I’d see less of him after I graduated and went to college
But I knew I’d see him when I came back
He still would’ve been only a couple of hours away
      It hurts
I don’t want him to leave

I hate this I hate this I hate this
      I feel so bad
For some reason it feels wrong that I’m so upset
It feels like it’s mean to Stormy
Like I shouldn’t be crying over someone else
      But I can’t stop
I can’t stop and stay healthy
      I’m trying to stay happy
      To stay positive
And make the best of the time left
      But it’s so hard
      I dunno what to do
I don’t wanna bring everyone else’s spirits down with me
But times so short he’ll only be here until the end of the semester
      I’m scared
If I didn’t have my Stormy I think I’d be completely lost

  • Lifetime Achievement Award - A Lifetime Achievement Award - A Warning

    • From: LincolnB
    • Description:

Well I am starting to collect my lifetime achievement awards. My first award: Angioplasty in the category of Heart surgery presented to me by a fine group of doctors at a local Indianapolis hospitals. I have worked my whole life to achieve this prestigious award. I want to thank all the people and companies that helped me achieve this award, including McDonalds, Burger King, Dairy Queen, Hostess, Frito Lay, Hersheys, oh there are too many to name them all and my time is running out. But I have to also thank my couch and especially my TV, for their 'huge' contribution in this achievement. Anyway, let me close by saying this; if you also want to start receiving your own lifetime achievement awards, continue your bad eating habits and don't exercise and I guarantee you too, will be rewarded someday.

    • From: SoKnow
    • Description:

One of our greatest down falls is sex.  Hands down, we humans simple cannot control ourselves no matter what age.

So, I have a question to pose for a healthy exchange if anyone dares to be involved.

Ladies.  If you have friends or associates that continue to have issues such as unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, and abortions, why do you continue to involve yourself in the same types of activities? It would think that you would learn from the people around you.  Help us understand the reason why you don't change your behavior?

Gentlemen.  If you have already had a situation with 'getting a girl pregnant,' why do you continue to have sex without condoms? Help us understand?  Do you not have the money for condoms?  Are you afraid to buy them?

Tell us your stories, we can help you.

  • Dressing for the Occasion: Sum Dressing for the Occasion: Summer Festivals

    • From: jenniferadams1985
    • Description:

It's an opportunity to stand out from the crowd - literally, of course! When it comes to attending those summer festivals, why not mix fun with a bit of fashion? The sun could be baking down from the sky or perhaps pouring down with rain at your festival of choice, but there's no reason why you can't still look good for the occasion.

When it comes to summer festivals, you may automatically think that it would make sense to pack sun cream, day cream, sunglasses, plenty of skirts, and vests into your suitcase or holdall. Unfortunately, with the difficulty in predicting the weather conditions, there is now a common trend of being overwhelmed with mud at your nearest festival, so it may be worthwhile considering a pair of Wellingtons; perhaps even a woolly hat and weather proof coat into your luggage. The latter items of clothing may not sound fashionable, but they can be!

There are of course many different types of festivals to attend in the summer, ranging from music festivals to family orientated events and most things in-between with perhaps the only difficult choice being what clothes to wear. However, festival fashion wear is your oyster, and while usually almost anything goes there are a few obvious what-not-to-wear suggestions to bear in mind.

Firstly, consider your footwear; stilettos may not be the best footwear of choice for a festival, with the ground normally either quite hard or very soft, which often results in your moving nowhere fast! More obvious choices such as trainers, flip flops, sandals or Wellington boots may be more practical depending on the prevailing conditions.

Flip flops are popular at festivals, especially on hot days, allowing your feet to breathe but also for comfort after a long day of standing in front of the stage. But if the weather turns inclement, then perhaps flip-flops aren't the most sensible of choices. If - or when - the weather does turns for the worse, don't be put off by the thought of Wellington boots; you don't have to look like a farmers wife, and with a great range of floral patterns available, you can have dry feet and look as good as celebrities do. After all, Wellington boots and a pair of hot-pants worked for Kate Moss at 2005's Glastonbury Festival.

Accessories are a female's middle name and when it comes to summer festivals a clutch bag wouldn’t go too far astray in holding those important valuables - that obviously being make-up. A bandana can be very useful for those who don’t like the prospect of displaying greasy hair, whilst also acting as a useful eye mask for when you are getting ready to settle down to sleep as the sun starts to rise.

The men may not understand festivals completely from a female perspective; the music or function is great fun, you persevere with the strange body odours, where ideally you would have a shower at any available moment but the fashion will also be there. Don’t be ashamed about modelling the best dress, coolest Ray Bands, wearing lots of layers or perhaps showing off your girly roots, it's your festival and a great opportunity to display your fashion sense.

    • From: blogger
    • Description:

When your home has water damage, be it from a burst pipe, overflowing sewer, leaking roof, or natural flood, it is in dire need of restoration. There's more to water damage restoration than simply mopping up and drying out the home. In fact, water damage is downright hazardous to your health!

First, if your home is flooded, the immediate danger is electrocution. In addition, structural damage to the building could cause injuries due to falling debris and unstable footings. The water itself may be carrying dangerous chemicals, raw sewage, or microorganisms that can make you sick.

Even when the home has been declared safe to enter, water damage restoration isn't easy and is best left to a professional. Time is of the essence as well. The longer water soaks your home and belongings, the more damage occurs. Plus, mold starts to grow in moist environments making it essential to dry out the home ASAP. You can minimize losses and future damage by acting promptly.

What's involved in water damage restoration? Stabilizing the environment, cleaning, disinfecting, drying, and repairing.

Before you can begin cleaning up, you must stop the inflow of water. For example, if your water damage is the result of a hole in the roof, you must secure the roof so that the water stops flowing inside. Likewise, if a burst pipe is shooting water into the house, turning off the water supply to the home is your first step followed by emergency repairs.

Other issues involve removing water-soaked insulation, determining if asbestos is present in water damaged walls or ceilings, and reinforcing damaged floors and ceilings. Opening windows and setting up a ventilation system such as fans is also an important step for stabilizing the environment. Depending on the nature of the flooding, this step may come after cleaning.

Next, standing water, mud, and debris must be removed. This cleaning step should be followed by disinfecting because rarely is water damage "clean." For example, floodwaters from swollen rivers carry fertilizer, sewage, chemicals, and other hazards. When the water recedes, not only is the residue left behind muddy and messy, it's dangerous. Disinfecting all surfaces is a must. Even if the water damage is due to a broken washing machine hose, the clean water that spills soon mixes with the dirt and grime embedded deep within your carpet and carpet pad.

Once everything has been cleaned, dried, and disinfected, the water damage restoration job is not over. Now, it's time for repairs. Yoga is a fun and relaxing way to improve your health.

      Health Benefits Within

From lowering blood pressure to increasing pain tolerance, the following health benefits can all be discovered within the body.

      1. Blood pressure. A consistent yoga practice decreases blood pressure through better circulation and oxygenation of the body.
      2. Pulse rate. A slower pulse rate indicates that your heart is strong enough to pump more blood with fewer beats. Regularly practicing yoga provides a lower pulse rate.
      3. Circulation. Yoga improves blood circulation. By transporting nutrients and oxygen throughout your body, yoga practice provides healthier organs, skin, and brain.
      4. Respiratory. Like the circulatory system, a lower respiratory rate indicates that the lungs are working more efficiently. Yoga decreases the respiratory rate through a combination of controlled breathing exercises and better fitness.
      5. Cardiovascular endurance. A combination of lower heart rate and improved oxygenation to the body (both benefits of yoga) results in higher cardiovascular endurance.

      6. Organs. Yoga practice massages internal organs, thus improving the ability of the body to prevent disease. Additionally, an experienced yoga practitioner becomes better attuned to her body to know at first sign if something isn’t functioning properly, thereby allowing for quicker response to head off disease.
      7. Gastrointestinal. Gastrointestinal functions have been shown to improve in both men and women who practice yoga.
      8. Immunity. Yoga practice has frequently been correlated with a stronger immune system.
      9. Pain. Pain tolerance is much higher among those who practice yoga regularly. In addition to pain tolerance, some instances of chronic pain, such as back pain, are lessened or eliminated through yoga.
      10. Metabolism. Having a balanced metabolism results in maintaining a healthy weight and controlling hunger. Consistent yoga practice helps find the balance and creates a more efficient metabolism.

  • General Motors’ fuel-cell work General Motors’ fuel-cell work may be in danger

    • From: agentm2
    • Description:

General Motors, a leader in development of hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, may have to curtail its cutting-edge work unless it gets another $50 million to $70 million from the government, GM’s outgoing research chief warns.

GM just emerged from a painful bankruptcy restructuring in which it cut 1,100 dealers; shed Pontiac, Hummer and Saturn; and lost thousands more jobs. Yet, through it all, GM maintained its hydrogen research program pretty much intact, even though fuel-cell vehicles are still years away from going on sale.

“The program has not slowed down at all,” says Larry Burns, GM’s retiring vice president of research. “The issue is, going forward, do we have sufficient money to operate at that rate?”

Trying to seek federal research dollars, directly or indirectly, comes at a sensitive time for GM. As of last month, the automaker had either accepted or been approved for $49.4 billion in government bailout funds, Automotive News reported. It has not had direct grants from the government for its hydrogen program.

Now, General Motors is in talks with “government and private entities” about grants or partnerships in hydrogen vehicle research, confirms GM spokesman Alan Adler.

Under Burns, GM has become known for its fuel-cell work. “They have done so much original, groundbreaking work in this area,” says Catherine Dunwoody, executive director of the California Fuel Cell Partnership.

Burns, 58, says he decided to retire to give the new GM fresh research leadership under Alan Taub, 54, who, he says, will continue with the same direction. Besides creating fuel-cell prototypes, GM is conducting a field test of 115 Chevrolet Equinox hydrogen SUVs.

The real-world test “shows how far the technology has come,” says Patrick Serfass of the National Hydrogen Association.

Hydrogen is a zero-emission fuel that emits only water vapor through the tailpipe. But fuel cells are costly, few fueling stations exist, and mass acceptance is considered years away.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu cut $100 million from the $168 million hydrogen research budget to focus instead on battery electric cars, which show more short-term promise. There are moves in Congress to restore hydrogen funding.

Burns says GM must continue hydrogen funding to stay ahead of Japanese, South Korean and German automakers that have their own programs. “The design we’re working on right now would just knock your socks off,” he says. But to maintain leadership, “It has put us in a position where we are going to have to rely on the federal government.”
